PLACEMAKING CASE STUDY
Placemaking is a comprehensive strategy for planning, designing, and managing public spaces. It leverages a community’s assets, inspiration, and potential to create areas that enhance urban vitality and promote the health, happiness, and well-being of residents.

01. THE "WHY"
This site was once home to an art gallery that burned down 20 years ago, and the space has remained vacant ever since. The Downtown Penticton Business Improvement Association (DPBIA) identified it as a location that could benefit from a placemaking project, as the area has been evolving with new businesses, homes, and more.
-
02. BUDGETING& BOARD/CITY APPROVALS
Once the lot was identified as a potential site, planning began with the DPBIA board's approval for funding and the concept, as well as grant applications to the City of Penticton. An overall budget was created and approved by both parties, which included sponsorships as a key part of bringing the project to life.
-
03. CONCEPT CREATION
During the concept creation, a site layout was outlined, along with a plan to host four major activations over four months. Once a month, the site welcomed hundreds of people for events like live music, a car show, a night market, Jazz Fest, and more. A modified and painted container became the food and beverage hub for the space. Three local architecture firms collaborated on the site plan, generously donating their time to the project.
-
04. PRODUCTION
Site production was both challenging and a lot of fun. Installing large wooden poles for lighting and cameras, and transforming the space into its final form, proved to be especially rewarding. Once the site was complete, planning continued with community groups, outreach to local businesses, and programming for the events that would bring the space to life.
-
05. EXECUTION
The first few events at the site were so successful that the City of Penticton asked the DPBIA to host more—and they delivered! The site soon became home to additional Music in the Park events, creating an incredible atmosphere where local residents danced to live music on what was previously a dirt lot.
-
06. WRAP UP
The Community Pop-Up Project will appear in new locations each year. The DPBIA now owns all the items necessary for the project. This edition was active for four months and hosted multiple events at the site, improved the corner of Main Street and White Ave in Penticton, provided a temporary space for exciting fun and memories, and helped lift spirits within the neighbourhood. The lot is now being developed, and the project will pop up again next year!
